課程概述 |
We will take a combined skills approach (i.e. incorporating listen & speaking, reading & writing) as well as vocabulary acquisition and grammar study using a variety of authentic aural and written texts. The first semester we will look at Learning Styles and Learning Strategies and how they can help us make the most individual progress. The second semester we will look more at vocabulary and concepts of your academic major as well as other areas of interest to you. |

課程目標 |
Research and anecdotal evidence suggest successful language learners set their own goals, practice frequently outside of class, analyze their own mistakes, and use a variety of different language learning strategies. The aim of the course is to help you improve your English and to encourage you to continue outside the class. |

課程要求 |
Attendance, class participation, punctuality and the handing in of assignments are necessary. You will be required to maintain a Language Learning Journal in which you discuss your weekly outside listening, a written text you have read and a conversation in English you have had outside of class. |

We will use a variety of authentic English texts both written and aural. Online newspapers such as http://www.independent.co.uk/, http://www.csmonitor.com/, http://nytimes.com/, http://english.aljazeera.net/, and http://en.epochtimes.com/index0.html provide interesting and varied viewpoints on what is happening in the world. http://esl.about.com/ has many articles on improving one’s English. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/ is a good site for writing in academic English. http://www.merriam-webster.com/ is a collegiate dictionary of American English and
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/ has a wonderful collection of listening material using British English.

Each week certain students will present articles of interest with vocabulary lists and questions on content, main ideas and details. Other students will provide listening segments from either an online source or cable TV. They will also provide vocabulary lists and assorted questions. As each student needs to present both a written and aural text we might have to do this in groups. |
